DOG-NET APRIL 2010 ()

Stephen Kline is an integral part of the modern dog art world - and rather than relying on pen or brush strokes, he uses the breed name as his mark. Such a skill means he has an incredible eye for form and control of his 'stroke' to achieve the drawing. He doesn't use simple pen or pencil strokes, but writes the words of the breed name! It is a technique that could be mimicked, and a technique many could take up, but I chose to title this interview Stephen Kline - Unique Artist because he has perfected this technique, placed his unique ability within the style and made a study of it for dogs.

Kline has been working on this genre for several years now and has an extensive catalogue of breeds available in lithograph prints; he also uses this technique with some other animal species, and also has quality work in other media.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PRODUCE ONE OF YOUR WORKS? PLANNING, TIME, CHOICE OF MATERIALS, ETC.

The drawings used for lithographs take over a month to complete. I write the name of the breed over and over; the strain on my eyes limits each drawing session.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

It is an original style - every line creates both an element of the drawing and a word.

ARE DOGS YOUR MAIN FOCUS FOR THEME?

I've completed over 115 dog breeds using the "Lines of Language" technique. But I use many different themes in my paintings and photography.

WHEN DID YOU START IN ART?

Mid teens...my first published art was my high school yearbook cover.

ARE YOUR PIECES UNIQUE OR ARE THERE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE (EG LIMITED EDITIONS, PRINTS, CUPS, WHATEVER)

I sell the "Lines of Language" lithographs in an edition of 500. Each lithograph has handwork added. I also can add the name(s) of the patron's dog into the art.

ARE YOU AVAILABLE FOR COMMISSIONS? IF SO, CAN YOU WORK REMOTELY FROM PHOTOS OR OTHER MATERIAL?

The commission fee for a pen and ink original drawing, personalized by using the name of the pet over and over, ranges between $750 and $1500, and takes about a month to complete. I need a very good quality photograph of the pose in which the patrons would like to see their pets.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OR SUGGESTIONS TO SHARE ON DISPLAYING OR STORING PIECES?

Frame your art using a quality custom frame that includes archival mat boards and backing boards. Never hang art where it might get direct sunlight.

DO YOU HAVE SOME FAVOURITE ARTISTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE AND SAY WHY?

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - Used strong composition when capturing working people in their environment.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON DOG OWNERSHIP IN TODAY'S WORLD?

Dogs and cats are great companions...find a local rescue and adopt.

COULD YOU SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE WITH US?

"You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." ~ Mark Twain

Kline finished his interview with ... "I just got word from a patron that her dog ate the two lithographs I sent her. The very same thing happened several years ago to a different patron."!

Personally I find Kline has an incredible eye for breed type, his resources are vast and varied, but he collates that information into a lovely representation of the breed in the drawing. The prints are affordable but respect the hours of work and quality of reproduction in the pieces. I have my breed's Kline print proudly positioned in the centre of my wall of favourite breed prints.

Stephen Kline has created a new drawing technique by using lines of language to make fascinating and charming lithographs. His art includes over 120 dog breeds, along with Santa, Eagle, Wolf, Penguin, Tiger and more. A few years back Kline sent his Santa, the signature lithograph that started it all, to his friends. The next holiday season Kline noticed that many had framed this lovable Saint Nick drawn using the words SEASON'S GREETINGS. The displaying of Santa had become a yearly tradition. Since the introduction of the Lines of Language lithographs in 1999, collectors now number over 6000 from over 20 countries and in every state in the US. Publications include Art in America, Art & Oxygen, and ARTnews. Through fundraisers and auctions, Kline's lithographs have generated tens of thousands of dollars for animal rescues and other charities worldwide. (from drawdogs.com January 2010)
