Every mating should be regarded as representing a stage in a deliberate and progressive breeding programme, the aim of which is to build up a strain that may be relied on consistently to produce animals capable of impressing their own good qualities on their offspring. This can be done. It involves the production of a number of individuals which are homozygous for all salient breed characteristics through systematic breeding and very careful selection of every animal, of either sex, used inbreeding.
It is commonly thought that to build a strain necessitates breeding on a very large scale, so that it is considered as something beyond the reach of the ordinary breeder. That view is quite mistaken. Any intelligent breeder can form and preserve a definite strain, whether two or twenty litters are bred each year.
